Defining the Middle Class: Is a Mercedes-Benz the New Sawah Padi?
Okay, so this minister says the Malay middle class owns Mercedes-Benzes and bungalows. Really?
First off, who decided that material possessions define a whole class of people? I mean, is having a fancy car and a huge house the ultimate goal in life? What about happiness? Fulfillment? Contributing to society?
Secondly, this feels awfully exclusive. What about the teachers, doctors, and entrepreneurs working hard to make ends meet? They're probably not driving around in luxury cars, but they're building strong communities and contributing to the country.
This whole "Mercedes-Benz middle class" thing feels a bit out of touch. It's like we're defining success by how much we can consume, instead of who we are and what we contribute.
Just some thoughts…
